Donna Cheshire

I studied textile design to Masters level and as a qualified teacher worked for many years teaching Art & Design.

In order to create a unique colour palette, I hand dye my own fabrics and then use these to create the landscapes and coastal scenes recorded in my sketchbook. I often incorporate recycled or vintage fabrics in my work - they add meaning to the story the work is telling. I love being so close to the Northumbrian coast and countryside and I especially like taking time walk and draw these stunning landscapes.

I work with hand dyed fabrics and free motion embroidery in response to landscape. I walk in and record landscapes that attract me, using my sketchbooks to make notes and drawings. I use these resources to create abstracted textile landscapes. I want to capture the sense of being in these beautiful places. The natural landscape is so important to me, I live in the city but each week I walk through green or coastal environments, taking time to appreciate the colours, textures and sounds and to note how I feel being in this place. Recording these walks in textiles is my way of treasuring the landscape.
